(Sports Network) – The New York Knicks will return to Madison Square Garden
tonight in search of their fifth consecutive win over the Toronto Raptors.

The Knicks finished a three-game California road trip by salvaging the
finale Saturday in Sacramento. Carmelo Anthony had 23 points in that one and
was one of six Knicks in double-figures as New York dismantled the Kings,
114-92, despite playing without All-Star Amare Stoudemire, who was out of the
lineup with a sprained left ankle.

Tyson Chandler finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and
Landry Fields added 21 points and five rebounds for New York, which had lost
to the Warriors and Lakers on their trek.

Rookie Josh Harrellson finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds in his first
career NBA start in place of Stoudemire while Toney Douglas had 17 points and
eight assists.

“For me it was a must win,” Anthony said about the game. “I was preaching that
to the team when we got here before the game.”

Stoudemire, who averaged 26.8 points and 11.5 rebounds against the Raptors in
2010-11, is listed as day-to-day and the Knicks hope to have him back tonight.

The Raptors, meanwhile, have dropped three straight since taking their season
opener at Cleveland. The latest setback came in Orlando on Sunday during the
second leg of a three-game road trip. Hedo Turkoglu scored 10 of his 15 points
in the final stanza of that one as the Magic overcame a 13-point, fourth-
quarter deficit to take down Toronto, 102-96.

Andrea Bargnani had 28 points and seven rebounds, while Jose Calderon added 18
points and 13 assists for the Raptors.

“We are doing some good things, but we have to be able to finish it out,”
Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “When a veteran comes and closes the door like
Orlando did tonight, we’ve got to turn around, hold the lead, and not let a
team take a run on us the way they did.”

Bargnani, who had a career-high 41 points in a 113-110 loss at MSG last
December, is especially hot lately, averaging 26.3 points in his last three
games.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points, Tyson Chandler had 18 of his 22 in the second half, and the New York Knicks assumed control early in beating the Sacramento Kings 114-92 on Saturday night.

The Knicks didn’t miss starting forward Amare Stoudemire, their leading rebounder and second-leading scorer who sat out with a sprained left ankle. They got an unexpected lift from replacement Josh Harrellson, a rookie from Kentucky who made his first NBA start and had career highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds, and hit four 3-pointers.

In the team’s first three games, Harrellson had three points and five rebounds in 29 minutes.

New York (2-2) used a 15-0 run in the opening quarter to take a 35-20 lead. Toney Douglas scored nine points and had three of the Knicks’ six 3-pointers.

Landry Fields had 21 points and Chandler added seven rebounds for the Knicks, who had struggled offensively in losing their previous two games, but had a season-high point total against the Kings. Douglas had 17 points and eight assists.

Marcus Thornton had 14 points for the struggling Kings (1-3), who have lost three straight after defeating the Lakers at home to start the season. Both Jason Thompson and Tyreke Evans had 13 points. The Kings shot 35 percent from the field and made only 26 of 41 free throws.

With the Knicks getting contributions from many different players, Anthony was quiet early in the game and his first basket didn’t come until he made a driving layup midway through the second quarter.

Yet he still had 17 at halftime and the Knicks had a 14-point lead.

With the Knicks ahead by 13 points entering the fourth quarter, Chandler scored eight points in the opening three minutes, including two three-point plays. Chandler’s second one put New York ahead 88-70. The lead was 20 points or more for much of the fourth quarter.

Chandler was in foul trouble and barely a factor in the first half, playing four minutes. However, the veteran center made all six free throws and had eight points in the third quarter in helping the Knicks take a 78-65 lead into the fourth.

Anthony scored 15 points and Harrellson had 11 in the opening half, when the Knicks led 56-42. The Kings shot 33 percent as their offensive problems continued.

Notes: Knicks reserve forward Jared Jeffries missed his third straight game with a sore right calf. . The Chicago Bulls also had a 15-0 first-quarter run against the Kings in Thursday’s game. . Free throws continue to be a problem for Evans, who has made 13 of 27 this season. . Knicks rookie center Jerome Jordan committed four fouls in his first seven minutes.

Learning at a morning shootaround that he would be making his first NBA start because teammate Amare Stoudemire was injured, New York Knicks rookie Josh Harrellson didn’t have a lot of time to be nervous.

And the rookie from Kentucky didn’t show it, either.

Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points and the Knicks got an unexpected 14 points and 12 rebounds from Harrellson in controlling the game early and cruising past the Sacramento Kings, 114-92 on Saturday night.

The Knicks didn’t miss starting forward Stoudemire, their leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, who sat out with a sprained left ankle. All five starters had 14 points or more for New York, which took a 14-point lead into halftime and the lead never dipped below double digits in the second half as the Knicks snapped a two-game losing streak.

Tyson Chandler had 22 points and seven rebounds, and Landry Fields scored 21 points for the Knicks, who had struggled offensively in losing their previous two games, but had a season-high point total against the Kings. Toney Douglas had 17 points and eight assists, and Bill Walker added 11 points.

“When the ball is moving like that, you can see how successful we can be offensively,” said Fields, discussing the Knicks’ season-high 26 assists. “It’s a very nice win. Hopefully it brings us momentum going into our next game (Monday at home against Toronto).”

Harrellson connected on his first shot, a wide-open 3-pointer two minutes into the game. He added three more 3-pointers and clearly outplayed Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, his teammate for one season at Kentucky.

“I guarded him all season at practice, so I felt like I know DeMarcus’ game,” Harrelson said. “I thought I did a good job on my former teammate. I was trying to get him out of whack, get him out of his rhythm.”

There had been no rhythm offensively in the first three games for Harrellson, who had a combined three points and five rebounds in 29 minutes.

“It was very important for me to make that first shot and get my confidence going,” Harrellson said. “They had to come out and guard me and that opened things up and left other people open.”

New York (2-2) used a 15-0 run in the opening quarter to take a 35-20 lead. Douglas scored nine points and had three of the Knicks’ six 3-pointers.

“They were hitting big threes and executing and jumped on us and we were never able to crawl back in the game,” Kings coach Paul Westphal said.

Sacramento plays a home game against New Orleans on New Year’s night.

“This is a very disappointing loss because we had a very good practice (Friday), probably our best practice of the year,” Kings forward Chuck Hayes said. “But we came out like we don’t know how to carry it over. It’s discouraging.”

With the Knicks getting contributions from many different players, Anthony was quiet early in the game and his first basket didn’t come until he made a driving layup midway through the second quarter.

Yet he still had 17 at halftime and the Knicks had a 14-point lead. A rested Anthony finished with seven rebounds and five assists in 33 minutes, including just a two-plus minute stint in the fourth with the win secured.

“Our team is starting to pick up things in the offense that if we continue to do it, we can be successful,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said. “When you have a Carmelo with an Amare, it tends to open the floor even more. When the ball moves, our younger guys can get more involved.”

“From the beginning of the game until the end, we just looked lost,” Evans said. “We just play off our natural talent and that’s how we get our points. It’s terrible right now and we’ve just got to figure something out.”

That’s all the news for today.

New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire was benched for Saturday’s NBA game at Sacramento with a left ankle sprain suffered in a loss two days earlier.

Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said the playmaker’s availability will be decided on a day-to-day basis after he was hurt in a 99-82 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Stoudemire did not take part in a team workout on Friday.

The Knicks, who began the season last Sunday with a home victory over Boston, had already been hit with injury setbacks.

Forward Jared Jeffries is out for up to two weeks with a strained right calf and guard Iman Shumpert has a right knee sprain that will sideline him for two to four weeks.

Josh Harrellson was named to replace Stoudemire in the starting lineup against the Kings, the closing game in a west-coast road swing for the Knicks.

The New York Knicks have a tough game against the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night (Dec. 31)

The New York Knicks have a tough game against the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night (Dec. 31). Currently the Knicks are on a two-game losing streak and may have to play without power forward Amare Stoudemire. I wrote about how the Stoudemire injury could become a good thing for the Knicks if it is just a short-term thing, but it’s definitely tough to play without one of the two best players on the roster.

It’s very unclear what coach Mike D’Antoni will do if he doesn’t have Stoudemire in the starting lineup, but it could mean a chance for Bill Walker to step in at power forward. He is certainly a bit undersized at 6-6 and 235 pounds, but we aren’t talking about a team with a lot of depth. The other option is to give rookie Josh Harrellson that chance to get some big minutes for the night. I like the latter option because Harrellson has really good energy on the floor.

The starting lineup for the Kings is Tyreke Evans at point guard, Marcus Thornton at shooting guard, John Salmons at small forward, Chuck Hayes at power forward and DeMarcus Cousins at center. Through three games for the Kings, Thornton leads them in scoring with 20.3 points per game, followed by Evans and Cousins with 14.3 each. Both Hayes and Cousins average more than 10 rebounds per game, so the front line of New York is going to have their hands full. Providing energy off the bench are guard Jimmer Fredette and power forward J.J. Hickson, two players that go all-out every night.

The Kings are 1-2 (just like the Knicks through the first three games and average just 92.3 points per game. They also give up 100 points per game, which should allow the Knicks plenty of opportunities to score. New York is getting out-scored this year as well though, to the tune of 98.3 to 88.7, ranking the Knicks as the sixth lowest-scoring team in the NBA. The team is also the worst rebounding team at just 31.3 per game, so going up against a team packed with good big men could pose a problem on Saturday night.

The Kings aren’t as good as the two teams that New York has lost to this week, but this is also a team that should not get underestimated. Tyson Chandler has to stay busy on the offensive glass and it’s worth noting that he has just 6 total shots through the first three games. Carmelo Anthony needs to have a big game and the guards have to start hitting shots. The open three-pointers that the Knicks miss are really starting to add up and the team has gone just 19-for-63 from long-range in the first three games.

The game plan is simple on Saturday, even if it isn’t simple to carry out. The Knicks have to work the inside-outside game, make at least 45 percent of their three-pointers and keep the Kings from getting too many fast-break points. Evans and Fredette like to run and the Knicks guards have to put a body on them.

The Knicks play the Sacramento Kings at Power Balance Pavilion on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. ET.

The final score was not indicative of the pace of the game. Despite the Lakers falling just short of breaking through the century mark, defense was the key to the Lakers beating the Knicks. The Lakers pounded the Knicks into submission and sent them on their way to Sacramento with their tail between their legs.

This was the second game of a three-game West Coast swing for the Knicks, who lost to the Golden State Warriors, 92-78, in Oakland December 28. Now after going down in defeat to the Lakers, the Knicks will now travel back to Sacramento to take on the Sacramento Kings on New Year’s Eve. The NBA scheduler must have it in for the Knicks with those travel arrangements.

The Knicks, playing their third game of the season with the Lakers and their first back-to back of the season, looked slow and frustrated most of the game. There were several dumb fouls on the Knicks side, including an ill-advised foul on Kobe Bryant as he threw up and hit a three-point bomb from long-range.

The Lakers are not lighting up the scoreboard as they have in year’s past. This Lakers team is going to play grind-it-out basketball every game. The days of 120 point Lakers games is over and the Mike Brown era has begun.

The Knicks have added depth in the last few days with their pick up of Jeremy Lin and through the off season with the key additions of Tyson Chandler and Baron Davis. Davis has not played due to a back injury but Chandler is in the news for his comments about Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks

Chandler has been in the news since he made it clear the Mavericks are positioning themselves for the 2012-2013 season. Chandler spoke before the Knicks embarked on their three-game trip and said the Mavericks roster strategy was a major reason for him signing with the Knicks this off season.

The win over the Knicks was a huge boost to the Lakers because they did not have Andrew Bynum under the basket for this game. The Lakers are a much better team when a healthy Bynum is wreaking havoc under and above the rim. Get ready for a patented Los Angeles Lakers hot streak early in the season.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mark Jackson didn’t see much significance in coaching Golden State to a win against his former team.

It was the way the Warriors beat the New York Knicks that meant the most to Jackson — doing it with a defensive focus that hasn’t been seen from this franchise on a consistent basis in more than a decade.

Then again, that’s been Jackson’s message to his players ever since he was hired in June.

“This is going to be strange to hear: We’re a defensive team,” Jackson said following Golden State’s 92-78 victory Wednesday night. “It’s a shocker. Great players are going to come in and have great nights, but our job is make it tough. We had a bad first half offensively, but the defense gave us a chance to win a ballgame.”

Golden State definitely made it tough on New York’s All-Star duo of Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, who combined to go just 8 of 27 from the floor after teaming for 58 points in the Knicks’ Christmas Day win over the Boston Celtics.

Stoudemire finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Anthony had 13 points.

“The whole game our offense was awful,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said. “We weren’t in synch, we didn’t make shots, we turned the ball over and we gave them layups. Whatever kind of mistakes you can make, we made. It was awful.”

Monta Ellis shook off a terrible first half to finish with 22 points and eight assists, while Brandon Rush added 19 points off the bench for Golden State (2-1).

Playing without injured guard Stephen Curry, the Warriors led by as much as 19 before cruising to their second straight impressive win over an Eastern Conference team. Two nights earlier they beat the Chicago Bulls 99-91.

Ish Smith had 11 points, four assists and six rebounds while starting in place of Curry, who sat out the game after injuring his surgically repaired ankle against Chicago.

Ellis went just 4 of 15 in the first half but scored eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, midway through the fourth quarter when Golden State pulled away.

But it was the Warriors’ defense that made the biggest difference — a refreshing change considering the team’s recent history of shunning that part of the game.

“That’s our focus, defense,” Ellis said. “Just going out there getting the job done. That’s what’s keeping us in the game against great teams like this. Our defense kept us in the game and the offense won the game for us.”

No one else could pick up the scoring slack for the Knicks, who were also outrebounded 47-31 by the smaller but quicker Warriors.

Landry Fields had 13 of his 14 points in the first half. Bill Walker also scored 14 for the Knicks, who failed in their bid to start the season with consecutive victories for the first time since 1999.

Former Knick David Lee scored 13 points for Golden State (2-1).

This was the first stop on a three-game trip to the West Coast for New York.

The Knicks, who beat the Celtics on Christmas Day to kick off the truncated NBA schedule after losing all eight games to Boston in 2010, play the Lakers in Los Angeles on Thursday. They return to Northern California to face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

The Warriors played without Curry, who landed awkwardly on his surgically repaired right ankle in the fourth quarter of Monday’s win over Chicago.

It was the second time in seven days that Curry injured the ankle. He also missed eight games last season because of lingering ankle problems.

“It was the best thing to give it some time to heal,” Jackson said before the game. “Bottom line is he got hurt landing on somebody and we are going to give it some time to heal.”

Smith started in place of Curry and scored seven of Golden State’s first 10 points. He finished 5 of 13 from the floor.

Anthony and Stoudemire couldn’t get much of anything to fall. The duo repeatedly settled for long jumpers, a trend that continued deep into the fourth quarter.

Even with their two stars off to a slow start, the Knicks took a 43-37 lead into the half.

Golden State closed the gap with a 15-5 run early in the second half, tied the game at 64 when Rush made a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds remaining in the third quarter, then took control with 20-6 burst in the fourth.

The Warriors opened a 19-point lead with 4:09 left when the Knicks frustrations began to show. Tyson Chandler tossed Lee to the ground and was whistled for a technical foul, bringing the sold-out crowd at Oracle Arena to its feet.

“I’m not making any excuses, but we’re a young team that’s coming together and we have to build,” said Chandler, who was held to two points and three rebounds. “Unfortunately, we’re learning things on the fly.”

Notes: The Warriors have agreed to terms with 7-foot-1 free agent center Kyrylo Fesenko on a one-year contract pending Fesenko passing a physical. Fesenko, who spent the past four seasons mostly as a backup with the Utah Jazz, was in Golden State’s locker room before the game but neither nor the Warriors can talk about the deal until it is complete. … The Warriors have sold out the first three games on this four-game homestand. … Former Golden State guard Jeremy Lin, who signed with the Knicks on Tuesday, entered the game late in the fourth quarter and missed his only shot attempt.

Dec 29, 2011 – The New York Knicks started their only West Coast road trip off in disappointing fashion on Wednesday, losing to the Golden State Warriors 92-78. The Knicks’ offense was ice-cold, as New York shot 40 percent from the floor and hit just four of 21 three-pointers. The Knicks (1-1) couldn’t do anything with those misses, either, grabbing just four offensive rebounds in 40 opportunities.

Monta Ellis led the Warriors (2-1) in scoring with 22 with 8-22 shooting and eight assists, but Brandon Rush deserves some attention, too. The recent acquisition scored 19 on 15 total shot attempts off the bench, and added six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in 26 minutes. David Lee also continued his strong start with a muted but effective 13-point, five-rebound night. Lee’s most important contribution was in getting Tyson Chandler into bad foul trouble; Chandler played just 21 minutes, and Lee drew nine free throw attempts.

Carmelo Anthony shot just 3-13 from the floor against Dorell Wright and Rush. Amar’e Stoudemire shot 5-14 on his way to a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Knicks visit the Lakers on Thursday and the Kings on Saturday before returning to the East Coast.

OAKLAND, Calif.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—Mark Jackson didn’t see much significance in coaching
Golden State to a win against his former team.

It was the way the Warriors beat the New York Knicks that meant the most to
Jackson—doing it with a defensive focus that hasn’t been seen from this
franchise on a consistent basis in more than a decade.

Then again, that’s been Jackson’s message to his players ever since he was
hired in June.

“This is going to be strange to hear: We’re a defensive team,” Jackson
said following Golden State’s 92-78 victory Wednesday night. “It’s a shocker.
Great players are going to come in and have great nights, but our job is make it
tough. We had a bad first half offensively, but the defense gave us a chance to
win a ballgame.”

Golden State definitely made it tough on New York’s All-Star duo of Amare
Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, who combined to go just 8 of 27 from the floor
after teaming for 58 points in the Knicks’ Christmas Day win over the Boston
Celtics.

Stoudemire finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Anthony had 13
points.

“The whole game our offense was awful,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said.
“We weren’t in synch, we didn’t make shots, we turned the ball over and we gave
them layups. Whatever kind of mistakes you can make, we made. It was awful.”

Monta Ellis shook off a terrible first half to finish with 22 points and
eight assists, while Brandon Rush added 19 points off the bench for Golden State
(2-1).

Playing without injured guard Stephen Curry, the Warriors led by as much as
19 before cruising to their second straight impressive win over an Eastern
Conference team. Two nights earlier they beat the Chicago Bulls 99-91.

Ish Smith had 11 points, four assists and six rebounds while starting in
place of Curry, who sat out the game after injuring his surgically repaired
ankle against Chicago.

Ellis went just 4 of 15 in the first half but scored eight straight points,
including a pair of 3-pointers, midway through the fourth quarter when Golden
State pulled away.

But it was the Warriors’ defense that made the biggest difference—a
refreshing change considering the team’s recent history of shunning that part of
the game.

“That’s our focus, defense,” Ellis said. “Just going out there getting
the job done. That’s what’s keeping us in the game against great teams like
this. Our defense kept us in the game and the offense won the game for us.”

No one else could pick up the scoring slack for the Knicks, who were also
outrebounded 47-31 by the smaller but quicker Warriors.

Landry Fields had 13 of his 14 points in the first half. Bill Walker also
scored 14 for the Knicks, who failed in their bid to start the season with
consecutive victories for the first time since 1999.

Former Knick David Lee scored 13 points for Golden State (2-1).

This was the first stop on a three-game trip to the West Coast for New York.

The Knicks, who beat the Celtics on Christmas Day to kick off the truncated
NBA schedule after losing all eight games to Boston in 2010, play the Lakers in
Los Angeles on Thursday. They return to Northern California to face the
Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

The Warriors played without Curry, who landed awkwardly on his surgically
repaired right ankle in the fourth quarter of Monday’s win over Chicago.

It was the second time in seven days that Curry injured the ankle. He also
missed eight games last season because of lingering ankle problems.

“It was the best thing to give it some time to heal,” Jackson said before
the game. “Bottom line is he got hurt landing on somebody and we are going to
give it some time to heal.”

Smith started in place of Curry and scored seven of Golden State’s first 10
points. He finished 5 of 13 from the floor.

Anthony and Stoudemire couldn’t get much of anything to fall. The duo
repeatedly settled for long jumpers, a trend that continued deep into the fourth
quarter.

Even with their two stars off to a slow start, the Knicks took a 43-37 lead
into the half.

Golden State closed the gap with a 15-5 run early in the second half, tied
the game at 64 when Rush made a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds remaining in the
third quarter, then took control with 20-6 burst in the fourth.

The Warriors opened a 19-point lead with 4:09 left when the Knicks
frustrations began to show. Tyson Chandler tossed Lee to the ground and was
whistled for a technical foul, bringing the sold-out crowd at Oracle Arena to
its feet.

“I’m not making any excuses, but we’re a young team that’s coming together
and we have to build,” said Chandler, who was held to two points and three
rebounds. “Unfortunately, we’re learning things on the fly.”

Notes: The Warriors have agreed to terms with 7-foot-1 free agent center
Kyrylo Fesenko on a one-year contract pending Fesenko passing a physical.
Fesenko, who spent the past four seasons mostly as a backup with the Utah Jazz,
was in Golden State’s locker room before the game but neither nor the Warriors
can talk about the deal until it is complete. … The Warriors have sold out the
first three games on this four-game homestand. … Former Golden State guard
Jeremy Lin, who signed with the Knicks on Tuesday, entered the game late in the
fourth quarter and missed his only shot attempt.

Michael D’Antoni has lived the life of a military brat, only without the weapons, the war, oh, and a parent in a branch of the military.

That was all replaced by basketball.

D’Antoni, the son of New York Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni and nephew of former longtime Socastee High coach Dan D’Antoni, is a worldly 17-year-old who has lived in four states and Italy on two occasions as his father followed a career coaching on the hardcourt.

“He’s had a rather nomadic life,” said D’Antoni’s mother, Laurel, who is in Myrtle Beach this week to watch her son play in the Beach Ball Classic. “He’s lived everywhere, and I think he does really well adjusting to different places. He understands that there are a lot of different places to see and a lot of different things he’s been exposed to. He understands this is our life. That’s all he knows. It’s always been that way.”

As a 17-year-old junior at Rye High in New York, D’Antoni is now trying to forge a small place of his own in the basketball world.

Despite the constant presence of basketball in his life, D’Antoni only casually played the game until last year. In the past couple years the 5-10 guard began to put in the time and effort necessary to make basketball a college consideration.

“It would definitely be fun to play in college. I’m not going to doubt that,” D’Antoni said. “I would love to do that. But if I can’t, then so be it.”

D’Antoni was born in Milan, Italy, and lived there for six months. He then moved to Treviso, Italy, for about three years; Denver, Colo., for three years; Portland, Ore., for a year; back to Treviso, Italy, for a year; Phoenix, Ariz., for six years; and Rye, N.Y., for the past three years.

“I’ve lived in so many different places I know different cultures, and I’d like to think I see things more open now,” D’Antoni said.

Italian was his first language. He learned English after moving to the U.S. and is now learning Spanish. “[Italian] comes and goes. Sometimes I remember a word and sometimes I can’t think of it,” D’Antoni said. “I always mix up my Spanish with Italian now because they’re so similar.”

He excels academically, and has played the cello in orchestra since fourth grade. “That’s been influential. It makes me more relaxed in school,” he said.

Though his game is still developing, D’Antoni’s maturity translates to the court. “He can keep his composure on the court. He never gets too high and never gets too low.” Rye coach Chris DiCintio said. “… I think he sees the big picture when he’s playing on the court, like he sees the big picture as far as life is concerned.”

Rye has lost its first two Beach Ball games, with one remaining Friday against Gaffney. D’Antoni has been a minimal factor in games, hitting 3 of his 10 field goal attempts – all 3-pointers – for nine points.

“If he gets a little stronger and maybe a little bigger he can get some small school’s interest,” said Dan D’Antoni, a Knicks assistant coach and a Beach Ball founder. “I don’t think his interest in basketball was as fueled as it has been in the past year. The main thing is his strength and getting stronger. His skill set is pretty good he just needs the strength to be a little more aggressive when he plays.”

Mike D’Antoni never pressured his son to play basketball. “He never stressed it or

anything, just if I wanted to do it he’d be there to help,” D’Antoni said.

Because of the NBA lockout, D’Antoni’s father was there to help this past summer and fall, along with his coaching uncle. They helped not only D’Antoni with his game, but DiCintio and his entire team.

Has D’Antoni been blessed or cursed by all the traveling? “It goes both ways,” D’Antoni said. “It’s great to move around and see these different places and see what I’ve gone through. But then again I wouldn’t mind settling down in one place.”

The toughest part isn’t having to constantly make new friends. “You get used to making friends after moving place to place. It’s harder to lose friends,” D’Antoni said. “I guess when I was younger it was so much easier for me. But this past move from Phoenix to New York, since I was in seventh grade in Phoenix and moved to New York in eighth grade, it was a hard change because it was the last year of middle school and I have to make friends all over and get ready for high school while I’m starting from scratch. It was really tough.

“But I went through it and now I’m fine. It’s perfect,” he said.

He stays in touch with many of his friends around the world by playing X-box Live with them.

He’s unsure of his academic focus in college, possibly something in business or science, he said. “I’m not quite sure where he wants to go,” his mother said. “I think if anything that’s the problem. There are so many opportunities, and every place we’ve been has brought a lot of joy to him.”

In a basketball family, experiences on the court have played a small role in shaping Michael D’Antoni.

“He’s experienced everything,” Dan D’Antoni said. “He’s in line academically, doing things that will last more of a lifetime than basketball. He’s a great kid; a super person to be around. He’ll be fine regardless of what happens in basketball. If it doesn’t work out, he’s had a great experience and he’ll move on.”

That’s all for today.

The New York Knicks head out on the road to take on the Golden State Warriors Wednesday night (Dec. 28). It’s a tough game because of the depth and youth that the Warriors have on their side, but a good aspect of this match-up is that Stephen Curry may miss the game with an injury.

Curry is one of the best young guards in the NBA, but he is down with an injured ankle that he suffered in the preseason and then re-aggravated. Curry averaged 18.6 points and 5.8 assists as the point guard for the Warriors last season and was looking to improve upon those numbers. He played in the first two games for the Warriors this season, averaging 12.5 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals, so having him out of the game really helps New York. There is a chance he feels better by game time, but even if he plays, Curry will have limited mobility.

For the Knicks, this is a great chance to prove something to the rest of the league. Having a road trip to the West Coast this early in the season is a tough endeavor, with games against Golden State Wednesday (Dec. 28), the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday (Dec. 29) and the Sacramento Kings on Saturday (Dec. 31). Hopefully it’s a test that the team can pass, and that by the end of December the Knicks are sitting in first place with a 4-0 record.

The Knicks are also still trying to figure things out with a host of new players this season. Guard Mike Bibby is back in the lineup and should provide some minutes off the bench and that is extremely important with Iman Shumpert out due to an injury he suffered in the first game.

The starters for the Knicks are point guard Toney Douglas, shooting guard Landry Fields, small forward Carmelo Anthony, power forward Amare Stoudemire and center Tyson Chandler. For the Warriors, the starters could shift if Curry is unable to play. The most likely scenario is that Monta Ellis shifts to point guard and Brandon Rush joins the starting lineup as the shooting guard. Starting at small forward is Dorell Wright, at power forward is David Lee and at center is Andris Biedrins.

The Warriors are averaging 92.5 points per game while giving up 98 per game through the first two opponents. The team has posted a 1-1 record and is grabbing 42 rebounds per night. New York scored 106 points in the game against the Boston Celtics and gave up 104 points. The team only managed 31 rebounds though, making the Knicks the worst rebounding team in the NBA so far. Hopefully that can change a bit on Wednesday night.

Anthony is also the leading scorer in the NBA with 37 points per game and Chandler is second in blocks at 6 per game. Those are just stats from one game and the Knicks hope they can get duplicated on Wednesday night. Start time is at 10:30 p.m. ET and the game is on NBA TV for fans to watch.

On Sunday December 25, 2011, the New York Knicks defeated the Boston Celtics 106-104 at Madison Square Garden. It was a nice Christmas gift for Knicks fans. Here are five thoughts on the game.

Amar’e Stoudemire played well when it counted.
commons.wikimedia.org/Chamber of Fear

Melo Was Marvelous

Carmelo Anthony looks great in a New York uniform, does he not? He looked determined and comfortable. It is pretty clear that he will lead the Knicks in scoring this season. In fact, he may lead the National Basketball Association (NBA) in scoring. Anthony scored 37 points on 10 of 17 from the field. He hit 13 out of 15 free throws. Anthony also had three assists, two steals and a blocked shot. He could be a candidate for Most Valuable Player in the NBA this season.

High Ratings on Christmas Day

This game was the most-watched game on Christmas Day on a cable television network. The game averaged 5.9 million viewers on the TNT channel. The Knicks are back and the NBA will benefit from it. They will be a fun team to watch this season.

Stat

After a shaky preseason, Amar’e Stoudemire shot well when it counted. Stat scored 21 points on eight of 11 shooting. It also looks like Stoudemire has added a new weapon to his arsenal. He went two for two from downtown. Stat and Melo combined for 58 points. It appears that they can play together, at least for one game.

Point Guard Problems

Toney Douglas and Iman Shumpert combined for 30 points and five assists. But Shumpert will now miss two to four weeks with a sprained right knee. With Baron Davis still on the mend, the Knicks will rely more on Mike Bibby. The Knicks also claimed former Harvard guard Jeremy Lin. Lin was impressive in the 2010 Las Vegas Summer League. He played in 29 games as a rookie for Golden State.

Big Man

Tyson Chandler had a quiet seven points and three rebounds. But he defended the lane with six blocks. These Knicks are no longer pushovers inside the paint.

The Knicks are off to a great start. Their next game is on Wednesday December 28, 2011 at the Golden State Warriors.

WARRIORS VS. NEW YORK

Tipoff: 7:30 p.m. at Oracle Arena

TV/Radio: CSNBA; NBA TV; 680-AM

Knicks update: New York showed why it is one of the top teams in the league, outlasting Boston on Christmas Day as Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points and hitting the game-winning shot. … New York claimed guard Jeremy Lin off waivers. The former Warrior and Bay Area native is needed in New York because of injuries. Toney Douglas is the only healthy point guard.

Warriors update: F Brandon Rush and C Kwame Brown figure to play key roles against the Knicks. Those two have emerged as key cogs when coach Mark Jackson goes for a bigger, more defensive lineup. … Jackson has relied mostly on Monta Ellis as the backup point guard. If starter Stephen Curry doesn’t play or is limited, that could spell big minutes for Ellis.

Knicks injuries: G Baron Davis (back) and G Iman Shumpert (knee) are out. F Jared Jeffries (calf) and G Mike Bibby (back) are questionable.

Warriors injuries: Curry (sprained right ankle) is day to day. It will be determined Wednesday if he can play.

— MARCUS THOMPSON II
